Berlin has produced so many musical bigwigs and this city is full of secret gems here and there that are trying to find their place in the spotlight. A band that you regularly see playing at Mauerpark on Sundays could be the next international breakthrough, and your favorite U-Bahn musician could one day become a global sensation. Personally, I can name at least ten DJ friends. They all work hard to achieve the success they want and we don’t want to spare the support. That’s why we’ve taken it upon ourselves to bring you the best and newest music videos from Berlin to save you those dreary and repetitive playlists.
The Heartways – By your side
The Heartways are a Berlin-based group founded by musician and virtual artist Saskia Hahn. Saskia made her Berlin debut in the mid-2000s with her rock and power-pop combo group “Sweet Machine”. Their distinctive style was recognized by Peaches, who took Sweet Machine on tour for two and a half years. After focusing on her visual art on media, painting, screen printing and installations, Hahn returned with a new group “The Heartways” and released “Maybe” and “By Your Side” in 2020.
Magic Island – So fair
Described as “honest pop”, Magic Island’s soundscape is imbued with haunting and unforgettable flavors in a dream setting. The artist weaves unadorned compositions with entanglements and twists of his signature weirdness.
Peaches – Pussy Mask
“I’m going to highlight a lot of concerns, but also a good laugh.”
Chatty cats and pussy rebellion, Pussy Mask is definitely a new guilty pleasure released by Peaches. The music video highlights the current pandemic and all the hassle we’ve had over the past year and a half with the best pussy footage.
Hyenaz – Perimeter
Perimeter is HYEANZ’s latest audiovisual work, with performances by Mmakgosi Kgabi, Martini Cherry Furter and Simon (è) Jaikiriuma Paetau. He asks the question “How does it feel to understand yourself as” just outside “and yet also” barely inside “? What is the feeling of barely belonging? Inside and out? How does it feel to be a “stranger” in a place that is familiar to us? What is foreign inside?
Novaa – She is a rose
Novaa’s sound mixes electronic pop with orchestral grandeur and they describe their music as “organic electronic”. Although they are definitely the product of contemporary electronic production, the songs exude a human warmth, also reflected in Novaa’s writing; “Human nature is infinitely strange and foreign to me”. And it’s this disorientation in love that they write about life, love and everything in between.
In addition to this, you need to know more about it.
VTSS – Goin Nuts
Seen from the perspective of a voyeur or someone watching from the edges of a crowd, “Goin Nuts” follows a growing tension around being observed in Berlin’s brutalist landscape and architecture, a daily reality of queer and POC communities in the city. . The self-representation of queer and POC communities in Berlin is reflected in very familiar ways in makeup and fashion.
Dental floss – Laser
Originally a fashion geek, FLOSS picked up the mic and walked into a music studio after being told she should be a performer. Already giving interviews on GALA, Kaltblut and Stern, FLOSS gives us positive POP waves with his album Floss Like A Boss. Her inspirations range from Katy Perry, Eurythmics and Gwen Stefani to Madonna, Peaches and Robyn.
Tóke – The sun is dead
Berlin-based Indonesian soul-pop singer-songwriter TÓKE gives us an authentic and strong commentary on our current social climate with his catchy melody. He says, “This song is based on the story of a close friend, who had to flee home to start a new life in a whole new environment. I want to help change the narrative around the notion of flight by drawing on the psychological and emotional landscape of an individual fleeing their home. These human beings are often only seen as a number or part of a homogeneous group which is “the refugees”. Many do not understand the basic reality that we are talking about individuals with an individual life story, with individual emotions, with individual perspectives. We need to change that. “
Elninodiablo – Dorothea’s Nightmare
Elninidiablo’s sound is conceptual and experimental, fusing organic sounds, field recordings, live instrumentation with synths and drum machines. Converging his club and DJ experience with meditation techniques, the result is a diverse range – from tracks evoking the vastness of deserts or the lushness of tropical jungles to tracks that explore emotional landscapes and dreamy states.
Jon Campbell – Metropolitan
Jon Campbell is a singer and painter born in the United States and based in Berlin. His latest album Metropolitan is a song about memory and time, and their preservation through art. The clip was shot partly in Berlin and Rome.
