After two years of a compromised festival due to pandemic restrictions, this edition of the Tanz im August 2022 festival finally brings all international dance artists back to Berlin to celebrate the art of contemporary dance. We’ve made a list of the plays we’re really looking forward to watching.
When most theaters and opera houses are on a 6 week summer vacation, it’s always a pleasure to have Tanz im August back in town to bring so many international talents and combine them with the Berlin dance scene in their program. The festival takes place on the most important dance stages in the city and we are really looking forward to seeing the Haus der Berliner Festspiele again after their renovation. This year’s edition not only has Adam Lindner and Jefta van Dinther as Berlin-based audience delights, but also some really interesting pieces from around the world which we’ve listed in our highlights below.
What I was happy to read was that the festival gives great importance to artists of indigenous origin in this year’s edition. It’s time to finally hear the voices of indigenous artists on our Western stages, not just step out of our comfort zone on topics concerning colonialism and our violent past and consequences today. But also because indigenous wisdom can teach us how to save the planet or at least do the best we can. Dance has always been one of the strongest rituals for creating community. I hope this year’s edition will show us how beautiful and powerful this ritual is.
Note: The plays below all have multiple shows/dates, the listing only shows one date each. If you click on the room, you will get the full information and schedule per room.
