A Literal English Translation of the Berlin Subway Map

Everyone enjoys looking at Berlin through the familiar grid of its dense metro and train network. We did this to find the way to the cheapest rents, the lake closure or the best burger – there’s even a map with an improved design that you especially liked.

Now we’ve found something new and we think you’ll like it – especially you lovely Ausländers. This is a map of the Berlin underground with literal English translations of all the stations that lead to hilarious word creations such as Seinfeld Plaza (Senefelder Platz), Janno Joke Bridge (Jannowitz Brücke), Shitbus Gate (Kottbusser Tor) or Virgin Heather (Jungfernheide).

While some of the new names are word-for-word translations that just don’t make sense in English, like Mister Man Street (Hermannstraße), others are more inventive interpretations such as Shampoo Street (Schwarzkopf Straße). It doesn’t matter if you’ve been to one of these resorts or not, browsing the map is a real treasure hunt for some unexpected puns.

The card was created by Barrington Russell of Metromashco, a British designer who got stuck in Copenhagen waiting for a shipment of tea that never came. He has already taken various metro maps from other cities such as Stockholm, Oslo and Paris, which he has translated literally, whimsically, questionably or even belligerently into English.
