Alexander Hamilton’s Complicated Relationship to Slavery

Alexander Hamilton abhorred slavery and at a few points in his life worked to help limit it. But the Founding Father’s relationship to the practice of human bondage proved complex. in the Americas during the 18th and early 19th century, it wasn’t easy to remain untainted by the system of forced servitude that permeated society and propelled the economy. For Hamilton, any moral objections he held were tempered by his relentless social and political ambitions. Throughout his life, he allowed slavery to advance his fortunes—both indirectly and through compromises he chose to make.
