If you feel like you’ve watched all of Netflix three times since Corona’s first lockdown, we’ve got some great news for you! Behind the Tree is a new streaming platform created in Berlin with arthouse films and short films.
The website offers a variety of indie film genres, including documentaries, horrors, and anime. Most of the movies are in German, but most have English subtitles, which can also be a great way to practice the language. The website also features international productions, such as the film “The Invisible Frame”, in which Tilda Swinton explores recent Berlin history.
Other Berlin-centric films include “Berlinized” – a documentary about the city from the 1990s, “Flucht nach Berlin” – a drama from the 1960s portraying a socialist government agent, and “Spirit Berlin” – a documentary featuring the multitude of spiritual beliefs practiced in Berlin. This short paragraph can already give you an idea of the wide range of films on offer.
Are you having trouble making a choice if you are faced with too many great options? It won’t be a problem here. On the Behind the Tree website, you can also find recommendations from curators, such as famous German actors Frederick Lau, Clemens Schick and Jessica Schwarz, or our fellow bloggers from Mit Vergnügen.
Behind the tree also has a dedicated podcast – “Behind the tresen”. Each episode (in German) is a casual conversation with a film professional. Again, if you are looking to practice your German, this is also a great practice! Available episodes include an interview with Mariette Rissenbeek, Executive Director of the Berlinale.
Enjoy exploring some arthouse movies from the comfort of your home!
