Futur Drei – Clashing Realities like a Sassy Queer POC Fantasy

Have you ever been out of the cinema and felt like the movie was still going on in your head? Last Saturday, walking out of Futur Drei and cycling with my friends to Kreuzberg, I imagined how my own life had instantly become part of the movie I just saw. Let me tell you why.

“Futur Drei – No Hard Feelings” tells the story of Parvis, a young gay man living in Hildesheim with his parents who immigrated from Iran to Germany before he was born. While leading a carefree life, he is bored of partying and fucking random guys and lacks some kind of direction, passion or commitment.

For stealing alcohol from a gay club, he has to do social work at the local refugee shelter. There, Parvis befriends Amon and Banafshe, a couple of Iranian siblings who form a kind of family to each other. Together they spend their nights and days and eventually Amon and Parvis begin a complicated love story that unfolds between aggressive shame and tender intimacy.

Not a nerdy gay coming of age – refugee fairy tale

Told in pastel colors and full of surreal elements, Futur Drei is neither a refugee fairy tale nor a romantic gay love story, although it ironically plays with those elements. It’s a wild clash of styles and he’s not afraid to be raw showing some explicit sex and masturbation scenes.

The story is partly based on the autobiographical experiences of director Faraz Shariat. The film begins with a clip from the director’s childhood where he dances like a little boy dressed as Sailor Moon. Additionally, he even used his own parents to act as Parvis’ parents. These elements sometimes make this drama blend into a documentary. It’s so authentic because although the actors are all professionals, they all share some element of their private life with their character’s story.

Even though my own life has been far from the realities portrayed, I could really emphasize with the characters. It’s probably already a pleasure for me to see a movie made by a queer POC team, with queer POC actors on queer POC characters. It might be that simple. Seeing yourself at the cinema is fascinating. And now I know what it feels like.

Futur Drei still plays in several cinemas in Berlin. So hurry up and go see it!
