Here’s to Togetherness – A New Glow-in-the-Dark Street Art Mural by Yeni Rakı

It’s times like these when being with our loved ones is the one thing we look forward to. But because of the situation, the whole world got together this year, that’s the one thing we should all avoid. And achieving all that we miss being together hits us harder than we ever imagined. As Janet Jackson’s famous song says: You don’t know what you have until it’s gone.

It seems like an impossible task – to be together without actually meeting. We are all trying to redefine and rethink our ways of socializing in these difficult times. Long phone calls, physical letter writing, video conferencing – we’ve all experienced these things to make up for what we lack. It can be an alternative, a new way to learn to cherish. But that takes a lot of goodwill and optimism.

Yeni Rakı’s new street art mural addresses exactly this problem. The iconic Turkish spirit is all about conviviality as it is enjoyed with friends and family on a table filled with delicious little Meze dishes according to a 500-year-old tradition. Eating and drinking together like this is a strong social ritual that we humans have been practicing for thousands of years now. It is very difficult to imagine a world without it.

To honor this ritual, Yeni Rakı commissioned Swiss artist ONUR, himself of Turkish origin, to create a mural for a wall in the Eastside Gallery. Her piece captures an imaginary moment of conviviality at a carefully set table at the Bosphorus with a view of the Leander Tower where a woman clinks her glass with an astronaut coming out of a video call on a laptop. The astronaut symbolizes the contradiction of distance and closeness and represents all the friends and family that we cannot meet these days. I imagine the astronaut is also a nod to Kreuzberg’s famous mural creating a link between Istanbul and Berlin.

When it gets dark, the mural reveals another surprise as the image has been painted with special colors that glow in UV lights. This is definitely an effect we haven’t seen in a street art mural before! You can watch a making-of of the mural here.

The mural not only celebrates conviviality, it also coincides with the launch of Yeni Rakı’s newly redesigned bottle. For next week, you can also win a special Yeni Rakı package if you repost the mural on Instagram. Learn more in the story highlights on their Instagram page. We say well done to that!

For many of us, any upcoming social gathering will look pretty much like the mural – through a computer screen and over long distances. And when you think about it, there is something important to learn from this image: instead of dwelling on the sadness of the lack of physical contact, we should instead make an effort to make it comfortable for ourselves and ourselves. focus on the one thing that really matters: spending time together.
