When I saw Katharina Grosse’s oversized works for the first time in 2014 at the Sainte-Agnès alias König Gallery church, I was so impressed that she instantly became my favorite Berlin artist. The intricate layering of colors was so spectacular that you were just impressed by the large canvases.
With her new personal exhibition at the Hamburger Bahnhof, which has just reopened after the lockout of last weekend, she goes up one size and goes further. When you enter the main hall of the building, you see an explosion of colors in three dimensions. It’s almost like an animated 3D reality glitch. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen.
But the artwork continues on the floors outside the building in the backyard on the walls and floors. It’s as if his work has spread in the city and who knows how far it will spread. Perhaps the city will soon be completely covered in these bright and happy colors. I cannot express how spectacular and incredible it is and I am so happy that Katharina was able to work with this incredible canvas.
