Key Features of MIMAS
Online Registration and E-Permits:
MIMAS facilitates the digital registration of mining lessees and the issuance of electronic permits, ensuring accurate tracking of mined materials and reducing illegal extraction. For instance, in January 2024, 92 mining units in Tiruppur district were registered under MIMAS for e-permit implementation .
Weighbridge Integration:
The system mandates the installation of weighbridges at quarry sites to monitor and verify the quantity of minerals being extracted and transported, thereby preventing illegal activities .
Monitoring and Compliance:
MIMAS supports the implementation of Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS), vehicle tracking systems, and drone surveys to monitor mining activities, ensuring compliance with environmental and regulatory standards .

By automating processes and integrating technologies like GPS and RFID, MIMAS helps in accurate royalty calculation, minimizes financial losses, and improves revenue collection in the mining sector .

About the Department:
This Department was started as a separate unit named as Geology Branch in the department of Industries and Commerce in 1957. Later, on 28-4-1983, this geology branch was restructured as a separate department called the Department of Geology and Mining.
Limestone in the districts of Salem, Ariyalur, Tirunelveli and Karur, Bauxite in Salem district, Quartz and Felspar in the districts of Salem, Namakkal and Karur are some of the notable identification made by the geologists of this Department.
The development of mineral resources such as Limestone, Magnesite, Graphite, Vermiculite, Granite, Quartz and Felspar, Lignite, Petroleum, Natural Gas, Atomic minerals has led to growth of mineral based industries such as cement industry, granite industry, creating employment opportunities and generation of revenue and bringing overall development of State economy.
