A personal story
If you’re intrigued by this track Somebody I Used to Know and wondering if it has anything to do with Gotye’s song or if it plays on repeat in the movie, the answer is no! The film tells the story of Ally, played by the genius Alison Brie of Glow and Community, a workaholic television journalist who returns to her hometown after losing her job.
There, she bumps into her ex, Sean, played by Jay Ellis of Insecure and seen recently in Top Gun: Maverick. They spend an entire evening reminiscing about their good times together and Ally hopes to find comfort in his arms. Except that Sean, after having his little heart trampled on when he separated from Ally, has rebuilt his life. And when Ally finds out he’s engaged to Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons), she absolutely puts her whole life in question.
At the origin of this scenario, we find Alison Brie who wrote four hands with her husband Dave Franco who is directing here his second feature film after The Rental. The couple shared a video on Instagram where they talk about how they came up with the idea to make this film: “We’ve written a romantic comedy called Somebody I Used to Know… and it’s all making us nostalgic for when we first met.“, says Dave Franco.
The video takes on a comedic tone when the director adds: “We found an old voice recording from 10 years ago. This is a true recording of Alison eloquently expressing her love for me. I saved it to my phone as ‘Drunk Alison’.“We are then treated to a succession of photos of their many years together, while we hear the recording of Alison Brie version gibberish in the background.
This video, funny and touching, sums up the spirit of the film well. Somebody I Used to Know doesn’t reinvent the romantic comedy, but it features endearing characters and comes just in time for Valentine’s Day.
