Early Life and Career Beginnings

Jacques Berman Webster II, professionally known as Travis Scott, was born in Houston, Texas on 30 April 1992 to his mother and his grandfather (his father died shortly after leaving his mother). Webster would reside with his grandmother in South Park, Houston, originally an Irish and later a high-crime neighbourhood, until age six, when he joined his parents living in Missouri City, a middle-class suburb, southwest of Houston. He graduated from Elkins High School and moved to the University of Texas San Antonio instructing himself for a semester before dropping out against his parents’s advice, to focus on music.

Along with longtime friend and photographer Christ Holloway, Scott created a music duo called ‘The Graduates’ who released an untitled, first EP on Myspace in 2008. In 2009, Scott created yet another group, this time with another schoolmate named OG Chess called ‘The Classmates’ who released two projects together. He dropped out of college and moved to New York City where he spent his time working with his friend, Mike Waxx but soon became frustrated when things didn’t progress. He then moved to Los Angeles after spending a mere four months in New York City. When he arrived in LA, he slept on a friend’s couch and continued to make music.

Music Career

His very first solo full-length, a mixtape called Owl Pharaoh, was scheduled to be released as a free download in 2012, but had to be delayed because of sampling issues to eventually be released in May 2013 via the iTunes store. Early on, he had already kept busy with the production of more music and live shows, including a gig at the 2014 South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin, Texas, before releasing the album, Days Before Rodeo, his second mixtape, in August 2014.

His debut studio album titled Rodeo was released in September 2015 by the label Grand Hustle and Epic Records. The album includes features from artists including Quavo, Juicy J, Kanye West, The Weeknd, Swae Lee and Justin Bieber. The album received a positive response from both critics and commercially and debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart. His second studio album titled Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight was also released in September 2016, becoming his first number-one album on the US Billboard 200 chart. That same month, Scott also signed a worldwide deal with Universal Music Publishing Group.

In December 2017, Scott dropped a collaborative album with the Atlanta rap trio Migos, Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho, followed in August 2018 by his third solo album, Astroworld. ‘Sicko Mode’ (the album’s second single) is his highest-charting solo single to date, having peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. At the end of 2019, he dropped a JackBoys, a collaborative album with acts from his Cactus Jack record imprint (launched in March 2017) that included Don Toliver, Sheck Wes and producer Chase B.

Some of his most successful singles and tracks are ‘Pick Up The Phone’ (2016) with Young Thug and Quavo (double platinum RIAA), Drake’s ‘Portland’ (2017), Kris Wu’s ‘Deserve’ (2017) – as well as ‘Watch’ (2018) with Kanye West and Lil Uzi Vert, and ‘Power is Power’ (2019) with The Weeknd and SZA for the HBO series ‘Game of Thrones’.

As well as releasing his own music, Scott has had a significant production career. He was executive producer for the compilation album Cruel Winter from the G.O.O.D. Music label, founded by Kanye West, and he has produced singles and albums for West, Jay-Z, Trinidad James, Big Sean, John Legend, Drake, Madonna, and others. The singer Rihanna’s single ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’ was produced by Scott.

Since then, Scott has picked up countless awards including the 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards’ People’s Champ Award, and at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards (when he also won Top Streaming Song [Audio] for ‘Sicko Mode’), he was also nominated for Top Rap Song, Top Rap Album, Top Rap Artist and Top Collaboration (for ‘Yes Indeed’).
