The new production of Puccini’s opera “La Fanciulla del West” at the Berlin Staatsoper gives us real Old West vibes. What a room to start the season after this interminable confinement! The premiere on Sunday 13 June is actually already full, but since demand must have been high after such a long time with closed stages, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and its long-time sponsor BMW came up with the idea of creating an experience. drive-in cinema where viewers can enjoy a live broadcast of the premiere from the comfort of their cars. When you read the synopsis for “La Fanciulla del West” you are probably wondering, wait, how is this supposed to be an Italian opera by the one and only Puccini? It’s a bit like this: “California, at the height of the gold rush: the place of people’s dreams turns out to be an inexorable wasteland, ruled by the law of the jungle. Minnie’s bar is the only place where people live in peaceful coexistence. It is revered by gold diggers and fiercely presided over by the surly Sheriff Rance. But when Minnie falls in love with a stranger who turns out to be the famous bandit Johnson, the fragile community is turned upside down.
With a plot from a film from the American Far West, the opera has always been a bit excluded from Puccini’s catalog with other pieces like “Madame Butterfly” and “La Bohème” which always command all the attention. It is therefore not surprising that after more than 100 years since its creation, this is only the first time that this opera has been performed at the Staatsoper in Berlin. But as they say in Germany: better late than never. And that’s what we are here for!
This unique pop-up drive-in cinema will take place at Tempelhofer Feld and it’s going to be totally happening! Expect a bit of Wild West magic and of course a bar with drinks and snacks to sweeten your opera experience behind the wheel. Tickets cost 38 EUR per car and if you don’t have your own car you can also book a discount code for a Share Now car when purchasing your ticket.
