The departure of Kevin Costner during season 5, however, did not change anything in the initially planned end of “Yellowstone”.
It has been almost six months since the end of Yellowstone was broadcast. An ending which left an unfinished taste for fans of the Western series, due to the departure of Kevin Costner during season 5. The absence of the interpreter of John Dutton also precipitated the end of the program, since it was not planned that the series ends at the end of this fifth season.
The departure of Kevin Costner forced the screenwriter Taylor Sheridan to find a conclusion to the character. It was therefore decided to stage his death by apparent suicide, in reality a murder disguised by henchmen at the boot of a formidable investment fund ready to do anything to seize the land of the Yellowstone.
The death of John Dutton was inevitable
There is no doubt that this death of John Dutton was precipitated by the decision of Kevin Costner. But if that can reassure the fans, it would seem that the death of the character was indeed planned, including if the broadcast of the series had been beyond season 5. The producer of Yellowstone Christina Voros confirmed it to the Hollywood Reporter.
“Inevitable, at some point, he was going to die” She said, adding that this end has always been planned by Taylor Sheridan. “Even if Kevin Costner would have turned 17 seasons, at one point in the history of Yellowstone, this is what must happen. The patriarch dies and his inheritance is transmitted to his children.”
Each Yellowstone series ends with the death of a Dutton: Elsa in 1883, Alexandra in 1923 and John in the main series (should we add Jamie to this list?). The death of John Dutton has also been foreshadowed several times, especially when it was diagnosed with cancer, then when it was seriously injured by bullets fired at close range in the final of season 3.
The Yellowstone integral is to be found now exclusively on Paramount+.
